Artist Statement
I worked as a botanical illustrator at Old Woman Creek in Huron, OH, where I chronicled the local flora and fauna while floating in a canoe. That practice of soaking in the natural world continues to influence my art to this day.
I love to capture the beauty of things in the natural world that might easily be overlooked. Currently I have been focusing on trees, enjoying the dappled bark of Sycamores, seeing tree knots and moss as landscapes, and the connecting points of roots, fallen leaves, grass, and soil.
I think painting, like music, can communicate certain truths that words fail to grasp. I believe the painter’s task is first to study what the eye teaches and then to express it using the language of composition, color, texture, and light.
